So I am not afraid to sit here and offer you a little embarrassing secret about myself. I am completely obsessed with Law and Order SVU. I have seen almost every episode, multiple times, and it was the reason why in fourth grade I decided I wanted to be a lawyer. I don't think that I am alone in this confession, SVU has been one of the most popular dramas on television for the past twelve years. I feel as though the success of the show can, in part, be contributed to the infatuation that "normal" citizens have with what happens behind the scenes in the courtroom. This curiosity has created an entire genre of films and television. Courtroom dramas give their audience a look inside what shady dealings a judge participates in, the amount of investigative work a defense lawyer has to do, and the way in which a successful trial is ran. Not only has our infatuation with looking behind the scenes of our justice system stemmed into a multitude of fictional courtroom dramas, but has also opened the door for an entire television channel dedicated to showing real-life trials. HLN has become an extremely popular channel because people are interested in watching trials from beginning to end. This summer, I personally know a good amount of people that watched the Casey Anthony Trial from the opening statements to the closing remarks, without missing a day. Technology is making it so much easier for our generation to understand our legal system and the way in which it works.
This clip, from Law and Order, is an example of the legal terminology that is thrown around on these shows and how we are now able to follow them without a problem.
